Review:
"American Pop" is yet another attempt at revolutionizing American by Ralph Bakshi. For those who do not know who Ralph Bakshi is, he's the guy who screwed Robert Crumb over with the "Fritz the Cat" movie, ruined "Lord of the Rings," and released a movie called "Coonskin." (Let's not even go into "Cool World," okay?) Well, this is one of his lesser works... so be afraid! It's a tale of several generations of a family trying to break into the music industry. It starts out dull and completely pointless, but turns to awful when it reaches the fifties and introduces the most obnoxious person ever as the newest member of the family. This guy whines, verbally berates his family, indescriminately impregnates country girls, and eventually joins Jefferson Airplane & the Holding Company in the sixties. Bad things happen to him, and we're glad. Eventually his Janis Joplin girlfriend ODs, and he has to adopt an illegitamite kid. This kid is just as annoying, becomes a drug dealer, and eventually breaks into punk music by stealing a Bob Segar song. This movie contains two extremely offensive moments: 1. Bob Segar as a punk rocker. 2. It animates Jimi Hendrix very badly. The film was only released to video recently because of legal rights, hopefully Al Hendrix got some money from this... cause that would be the only good thing about this horrid, horrid movie.
