I only permit myself to watch this movie once in a great while. Last night at 4am with nothing else on, I popped it in the VCR while I was working on my latest artistic creation---the need of background noise ya know! Aside from the house burning down around me, NOTHING stops me from painting yet I found myself abandoning the artistic tools to once again get swept up into this movie. I still cried when E.T. died, still laughed and cried when he came back to life. This movie is a timeless classic. Because of all the "Phantom Menace" hype about special effects, I TRIED to pick apart the movie E.T., and found that aside from the sky bike rides, this movie still stands as competition to the computer generated special effects of today. There are sceens where we only see the lovable creature's arm, and you can see veins pulsing--when he gets hammered on Coors beer, and is sitting with his hand on his head in disgust at his first hang over, his temples are pulsing, his face twitches and moves in such a human manner. When this movie first hit the big screen, I paid to see it 9 times. I saved birthday money, I conned every member of my family old enough to drive to take me. It makes me feel old that this movie will be 20 years old in 2001....but the story of a lonely boy in search of a friend is ageless, and a classic, and should be a part of everyone's movie collection. About the author: THIS is probably MY favorite movie of the 80's, if not of all time. You may read another review, submit your own, or return home. |
