Review:
American Gothic. To many, it is one of the classic works of art that our great country has produced. To others, it is one of the most horrible and disturbing movies ever to grace the horror shelves of Blockbuster. AG, which I believe was made in the slasher movie heyday of the mid 1980's, follows the basic plot of a group of whitebread teens out for fun, who end up getting killed in ridiculous and gory ways. The movie opens with the unlucky group landing on a "deserted" island. Eventually, the teens find a farmhouse inhabited by an elderly couple and there children. However, there children are all about 40 years old. Now, I don't know if that is for effect or because the director couldn't get real children, but is probably the most disturbing thing in the movie. Of course, the teens think their nothing but harmless crazies (harmless crazies?), but then one of them is mysteriously killed while on a swing set perched unfortunatly by a cliff. Then, the madness ensues. I'll spare you the rest, because I suppose if you are going to go rent (and please don't buy it, because it may persuade these people to make more) you'd rather not know what happens. Now, this movie is not without its merits. I saw it first when I was on vacation, and I was about 10 and it scared the hell out of me. So, if you have a small sibling, cousin or nephew and want to warp him forever, by all means, find yourself a copy of American Gothic. THINGS TO WATCH FOR: The mummified baby doll, the murder with a bathtub scene, the "smelling the chest of the dead girl" scene, The "see no evil" whipping scene, the swing set murder and the really surprising twist ending.
