Bringing me and my sister to see "Horror House" at the Twin Sky Hi Outdoor Theater in Addison, Il., in 1970 is probably something my mother would rather not be reminded of. After all, I was 10 years old when I was exposed to this particularly heinous bowl of grue. However, the good news is that by taking us to see this movie, my folks were just laying the groundwork for my eventual love affair with the drive-in movie - all its sleazy grandeur and celluloid trash. "Horror House" was made in '60's swingin' London and starred Frankie Avalon fresh off the beaches, off Annette, and away from Eric Von Zipper. "Horror House" was a 'youth' film, mini-skirts, and british slang like from "Austin Powers", baby - real shagadelic. Only this was the real deal. The movie had something to do with a group of friends hanging out in a haunted house and how they all start to get chopped up by some lunatic. The loony turns out to be one of the friends in a gnarly twist as Frankie "helmut hair" Avalon gets a butcher knife shoved into his gullet so deep the pointed end pops out of his back in a whoosh of gore. Yow! 10 years old, I was. Come to think of it, I think "Horror House" was playing with "In Cold Blood". Thank you, mom. Thanks. I appreciate it.
