Will Smith tried to work his July 4th magic with this update of the classic television series. Directed by Barry Sonnenfeld (Men in Black), this movie sees special agents Jim West (Smith) and Artemus Gordon (Kevin Kline) trying to foil the evil Dr. Loveless' (Kenneth Branagh) plan to kidnap President Grant (Kline again) and force him to sign a document which would reverse the results of the Civil War and allow the South to secede without punishment. Now, I ask myself, why exactly did this movie disappoint me? Was it Will? No...he tried. Will Smith is the type of actor whose charm can rise above bad material. Kline, however, was a bit of a letdown as inventor Gordon, and Salma Hayek (as Rita Escobar) is downright annoying... (I'm really sorry, Salma, I swear...) Sonnenfeld captured the offbeat perfectly in Men in Black; here, he seems to be creating a jumbled jigsaw of scenes that never really form anything worth watching. It just isn't good.
