Mortal Kombat was the rare example of an entertaining video game movie. It was faithful to the source material (and let's face it, MK's story was pretty good for a fighting game) and knew how to please the kids. Even now, at 19, I enjoy watching it whenever I see it on TBS, right down to the ending, which very obviously sets the stage for a sequel. In fact, I took my brother to see the sequel on its opening weekend. In fact, I'll let you hear what he and his friend have to say about Mortal Kombat Annihilation. Tom (the friend): "It was the worst movie of all time." My brother: "I wouldn't go that far, but it was the worst video game movie of all time, next to Double Dragon. Why don't you review that?" Anyway, this sequel sees the Earth's fighters (Sonya, Liu Kang, Rayden, Princess Kitana, and newcomer Jax) battle the forces of Shao Kahn, ruler of the Outworld (including the centaurish Motaro, four-armed Sheeva, cyborgs Cyrax, Smoke, and Rain, and ninjas Mileena and Jade). There are many problems with this movie, and I can't touch on all of them. However, there are a few I can address. (a) No Christopher Lambert as Rayden. (b) None of the original actors for any of the characters except Robin Shou and Talisa Soto as Liu Kang and Kitana, respectively. (c) They actually pushed the release date back to add more special effects. I didn't notice at all. And the final battle (displaying Kang and Shao Kahn's "animalities") was a display of how not to do CGI. Now that I've finished pissing on this waste of time and money, on to other projects.
