Earth vs. the Flying Saucers

| A classic bad science fiction movie, this is the one that really defines the genre of crappy sci-fi movies. Movies like Independence Day and Martians Go Home carry on the tradition, but this one's one of the original and best. They are flying saucers aplenty and stuff getting destroyed pretty much constantly. There's the scrappy cast which has to band together to defeat the alien menace. There's the scientists and generals who have to work together. There's romance between two main characters who manage to survive despite huge casualties. Yep, it's all here, and it's all pretty bad. Whenever you see this movie in a video guide you'll hear about its "breathtaking realistic special effects" which are really kind of crappy. I guess if you were a kid in the 50's this one blew your mind and it's really pretty good compared to a Flash Gordon serial. Everyone who sees this movie either loves it in that "I like bad 50's science fiction" way or hate it in that "I think this is really unrealistic and doesn't portray fictional aliens as realistically as such fine things as Babylon 5" way. If you're in the former category like me, you'll sit back, make fun of, and enjoy this one. Also, you may note that this is the movie Mars Attacks is making fun of most of the time (although I think you might like this movie better). |

| The effects; the "Brain Scan" device; the alien's bio-suits straight out of Guyver; the studly army guy's attempt to get the girl (which works; note to self, get uniform and act like big jerk); the use of scientific words to make something sound important and real ("Hmmm, perhaps the perihelion would effect the beams capability"); the triumphant destruction of many Washington, DC monuments; the "Deutchland Uber Alles" type theme music. |
